Scholarship Description: This position is available until 31 March, 2012, in the Gravitational Physics group led by Dr N.A. Lockerbie. The work is aimed at detection of vibration in silica fibres and silica test masses, using elecro-optical techniques, for use in gravitational wave detectors. The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D in experimental physics, with direct postdoctoral experience in both the fabrication and failure-mode testing of vitreous silica fibres for the suspension of optical components in gravitational wave detectors. Equally, evidence of work on the measurement (and, ideally, damping, too) of ‘violin-mode’ resonances in such fibres is essential. A sound practical background in the relevant optical and electronic instrumentation is therefore mandatory, and a knowledge of stress and failure analysis theory in disordered solids would be desirable, A letter of application telling us why you have the energy, skills, knowledge and understanding of Higher Education or other ‘Not for profit’ sectors to make a real and strategic difference in the post described, A completed application form to which a full curriculum vitae should be attached.
